Mr.
Chaney is a sharp-edged, but essentially kind, rancher whose
lot in life is the daily struggle of raising cattle for market.
He can be tough on his animals, but he’s never cruel.
His tendency is to be proud and controlling, but he’s
often humbled by his own inadequacies. He is embarrassed
to admit that he isn’t much of an expert on anything,
so he finds comfort in sticking to what he knows. He tries
to break Jasper the same way he broke his horses. But because
mules are slightly different, he continually finds himself
in compromising situations with Jasper. Still, his innate
kindness and sense of humor keep him from being really angry
with the young mule. |
